Year 1 and 2 students have began to learn Japanese for the first time. They can already say many greetings and manners phrases and have learned about some popular festivals, such as Setsubun (Bean throwing), Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day), and Kodomo no hi (Children's Day). They have made Sakura (Cherry blossom) paintings and Samurai helmets (see photos below).

Year 1 and 2 students can count to at least 10 in Japanese, as well as recognise these numbers when written in Kanji (traditional characters). We played many number games and sang a fantastic rap song. More recently they have learned the Japanese colour names and can describe several Japanese items according to its colour. The Pokémon picture book and colouring in task were very popular.
